Dead Horse Point Engagement | Jordan + Tyler

Double Exposure

Karlie & I were both ecstatic when Jordan and Tyler agreed to join us for an photography engagement session at Dead Horse Point in Moab! We renewed our vows there for our 10 year anniversary so we had already done extensive research beforehand. We explored the area on GoogleEarth and dug into the history on the Dead Horse State Park website. We discovered that the canyons were sculpted by rivers and floodplains, and the vibrant rock layers are made up of shale, sandstone, and siltstone in stunning reds, pinks, and purples.

What to Expect

The park is just 30 minutes from Arches National Park, which it totally worth staying an extra day to visit! We were able to convince Jordan & Tyler to to the next day. Make sure to get there before 7:00 AM or else you will have to book a reservation and pay for a time slot.

We met Jordan and Tyler at the Dead Horse State Park Visitor Center, about 40 minutes from downtown Moab. We kicked off our session at the overlooks right near the center, and we were immediately struck by the views. But we knew the best was yet to come!

We picked this park not only for its incredible views of the Canyonlands but also for its easy access to the Dead Horse State Park Overlook. It’s a short drive and a quick 10-minute walk from the entrance—no hiking required. We finished the shoot at the overlook, taking in the horseshoe-shaped river below us. The oncoming summer thunderstorm made it a bit nerve-wracking near the edge, so we recommend staying a safe distance away. Desert thunderstorms can come out of nowhere so please keep an eye on the weather!

BONUS!

As an added bonus, you are right next to Arches National Park! We recommend extending your session (or go on a little adventure) at Arches National Park and enjoy a beautiful sunrise overlooking Delicate Arch or Double Arch before the crowds arrived. It is absolutely worth it! Karlie & I decided to take our kiddos and go on a 3 hours hike! Nature is so relaxing and rejuvenating!

A couple of perks for doing engagement photos at Dead Horse Point:

  • There’s no photo permit fee for engagement sessions in Utah’s State Parks! That includes Dead Horse Point! There is an entrance fee of $20 per vehicle, which is valid for two days.
  • Dead Horse Point is dog-friendly, so your pup can join in the photos!
